The Earth-Moon System as seen by the Galileo spacecraft.

A double planet? From 4 million miles away on December 16, 1992, NASA's robot spacecraft Galileo took this picture of the Earth-moon system. The bright, sunlit half of the Earth contrasts strongly with the darker subdued colors of the moon. Our moon is one of the largest moons in the solar system. It is even larger than the planet Pluto. In this picture, the Earth-moon system actually appears to be a double planet. Read More:

Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses

The life-size Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses are believed to represent the armies of the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang -- he ruled 2,200 years ago. They were discovered in the Shaanxi Province of China (central China) in March 1974 by farmers digging for a well. Read More:

Super Moon and Micro Moon

A super Moon is just a full Moon at perigee. Perigee is the astronomical term for 'closest point in orbit'. Likewise a micro Moon is a full Moon at apogee. Yep, you guessed it, apogee is the point furthest away from the Earth on the Moon's orbit. Read more-

A Beautiful Telescopic View of Saturn.

Saturn is looking truly beautiful in a telescope at the moment and it’s wonderful to see the magnificent rings on show again after so long.

The image was taken with a Meade LX200 10inch telescope and a StarShoot Deep Space Video Camera fitted with a 2x Barlow lens on the 15th June 2013 at the Stardust Observatory at Leyburn, Queensland.

How The Moon Was Made

The generally accepted theory of the Moon's creation is the 'Giant Impact' theory. The idea is that around 4.5 billion years ago, when the Earth was forming, a Mars-sized planet- dubbed Theia- collided with it. It was such a cataclysmic event that the smaller planet was completely destroyed, sending its own iron into the Earth's core while throwing trillions of tons of debris from the surface into orbit. Eventually this coalesced to form the Moon. Read the full article here-

If Earth Had a Ring Like Saturn

As a matter of Fact, our Earth did once have a ring—as part of the formation of our moon, ironically enough. When the planet Thea crashed into the earth, a titanic amount of material was blown into space. This went into orbit around the earth, forming a ring until it all eventually coalesced into our present-day satellite.

If we had rings in the same proportion to our planet that Saturn's are to it, it is pretty easy to figure out what they would like like from different places on the earth. From the equator the rings would be passing directly overhead. Since you'd be looking in the same plane as the rings, all you would see is a bright line arching from horizon to horizon (Quito, Ecuador). Read More on facebook here: http://on.fb.me/12SDRIX

NASA Names First Astronaut Class for Deep Space Exploration.

On Monday, NASA introduced eight new astronaut candidates – four women and four men – who will “help the agency push the boundaries of exploration and travel to new destinations in the solar system,” NASA said. This is the highest percentage of female candidates ever selected for a class.

NASA said the new astronauts will receive a wide array of technical training to prepare for missions to low-Earth orbit, an asteroid and Mars. Read More: on.fb.me/128yTjw

Happy Father's Day.

Father's Day, annually honors committed human dads. But seahorse fathers might just blow those proud papas out of the water.

Seahorses are a type of fish in which the males actually get "pregnant." The female seahorse deposits her eggs in the male's specialized pouch, and the male carries up to 2,000 babies during its 10- to 25-day pregnancy.

Once deposited, the male fertilizes the eggs and incubates them,
until they emerge as fully developed little seahorses. Seahorse fathers even experience contractions as they give birth.
